In 2012, the Thuringian state capital of Erfurt decided to aim for the title of UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE for its medieval Jewish heritage. Erfurt would like to draw attention to the history of its Jewish residents in the Middle Ages, which is exemplary for the history of Ashkenazi (Central European) Judaism.
